When I decided to study fashion, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I had always loved clothes, sketching, and styling, but turning that love into a career felt like a huge leap. I took that leap when I joined a Fashion Design Institute in Kolkata. It felt like I was finally in the right place, a space where creativity was the language, and imagination had no limits. The moment I entered the classroom for the first time, I saw students working on mood boards, stitching garments, and discussing design ideas with mentors. A few months into the program, we were given our biggest challenge yet: to design and present an original fashion collection. Presenting something I created from scratch felt both exciting and terrifying.
I chose a theme close to my roots, blending traditional Bengali handloom with contemporary silhouettes. I wanted my collection to speak about culture, comfort, and modern identity. I sketched for days, visited local fabric markets, talked to artisans, and started stitching with the help of my mentors. There were setbacks. Some designs didn’t turn out the way I imagined. I ran out of fabric once. There were fitting issues, stitching errors, and self-doubt almost every step of the way. But I didn’t give up. The night before my presentation, I barely slept. I kept going over my notes, looking at my collection, trying to calm the storm inside me. I stood taller, my voice was steady, and for the first time, I felt like a true designer. The applause I received wasn’t just for the clothes, it was for the journey.
That presentation was more than a test. It was a personal milestone. I faced my fear, expressed my ideas, and stood proudly in front of people who mattered in the fashion world. I wasn’t just a student anymore. I had stepped into the real world of fashion, even if just for a few minutes.
The experience taught me that confidence doesn’t come from always being right. It comes from doing what scares you. It comes from preparation, effort, and passion.
